Ok, not Voivod shows, but good shows. I'm just back from the Festival d'été de Québec. Saw Daniel Lanois friday, and les Rita Mitsouko last night.

Well, Daniel Lanois rules. What a guitar player and great composer. Amazing show. He did all the best songs from his 3 albums, in a very minimalist way: him on guitar, a bass player and a female singer (and some guest drummers on occasion). He had that big fat dirty distorted guitar tone but made the most beautiful use of it. And we even got to meet him in his trailer after the show. He is very humble, and signed my wife's shirt. She's such a groupie!

Then last night: Les Rita Mitsouko. French pop doesn't get any better. They did mostly sruff from their last album "La Femme trombone" (The Trombone Woman) and old stuff too. It was the 80s all over again, with all those synths, but they could also rock. Catherine Ringer, their singer, is a real diva. She can do anything with her voice, and she uses it to make good noise (those piercing screams!), as opposed to all these singer that use their vocal abilities for evil purposes (like Céline, Mariah and those brainless dog whistles). As far as I'm concerned, Ringer could sing death metal and be convincing. Anyway, it really rocked: they opened with "La Sorcière et l'inquisiteur", for those who know it, it's quite an epic song. They closed with "Andy", jamming like crazy. Oh and we got to talk to Catherine at the end, through her trailer's window. The Groupie Routine, once again!

That's it.

I caught Lanois at the Mtl jazz festival and was equally impressed (I've never seen him or heard much of his music before) especially with his slide guitar playing. The stick who sings backup and does the twitchy dancing was annoying though, in spite of her lovely voice.

The back-up stick? I was too far to notice anything wrong, but the vocal harmonies were so powerful, so who cares. Oh and Daryl Johnson, the bass player, is one hell of a cool guy. He's the one who made us pass through all the security.

Little security guys were all freaking, and you had Daryl Johnson pointing at us, saying "It's ok, they're with me! Come in!"

Great memories!

Yes, back-up stick lol. I had the urge to run up on the stage and tickle her or shake her to get her to loooooooosen up a little. I just listened to Shine and I think it stands up fine without the additional harmonies.

Ya, I was thinking actually about "The Messenger", which had great vocal harmonies. But enough about Stick Lady. Noitall, you should have seen Catherine Ringer. Not only does she sings like a goddess, but she's a real Dancing Queen. It was as if she had a choregraphy for each song. I mean, she was hypnotic and crazy, and seemed to have so much fun on stage that it was contagious.

I'd like to see Les Rita Mitsouko live, they have crazy videos. As for the Festival d'été de Québec, I'm going to the Howe Gelb/New Pornographers show. Neko Case sings with the NP - now there's a lady with a voice. I guess the fellas who read Playboy think she's not too hard on the eyes since they voted her the "sexiest babe in indie rock."

I saw a great show Friday night in San Francisco. They are called Deadweight. The band consists of drums, cello and violin/vocals and and they rocked! Amplified heavy rock/punk/alternative, great lyrics and great energy. They have a website www.deadweightsf.com if your interested. Don't know if they have any downloads there, but they do have a listing of their upcoming tour. I highly recommend them

I also saw a Black Sabbath cover band that I found totally ridiculous! They actually seemed to have played more Ozzy songs than BS songs. I laughed my ass off the whole time (while I sang all the words, of course ). The singer was even wearing the tight, long-sleeved spandex top with the fringe that went all the way down the arms They did play "Into the Void" so that made it all better. Unfortunately (or fortunately) we missed the Alice In Chains cover band that came on first!

Went to the Rollins Band-show last night for the Rise Above Benefit Tour. They only played Black Flag-songs and they fucking rocked. Rollins is one crazy guy. Not too fond of his recent work with the Rollins Band, but doing the old Flag-songs, he just kicked ass.
