Auburn, WA 7/12/03 - I'm not writing this to bash the band, but it is just my own observation and my opinion...So you all know how much I love the band and their music and they made their choices to be there, but they were so out of place on this tour!! They were the only band I was there to see, so it was hours of tortuous crappy music for me! So after this lame-ass band called Hotwire played I was kind of encouraged when hardly anyone left the stage area. I thought, "Hmmm, okay maybe we've got some real fans here" albeit they all seemed about 16 years old on average Come to find out, there were a handful of real Voivod fans there, but mostly hordes of Jason fans who showed their true intentions of being there by going crazy only when Jason came to their side of the stage. Yup, they were all mellow, trying to sing along to the words (the new songs of course) and you didn’t see them vying for Piggy’s attention. They only played 3 old songs, one of which was the PF cover, and the rest new. I will say again that the new songs do sound great live. They looked like they had a great time playing - as they always do - but after they played I was saddened to hear someone announce that for a mere $20 I could purchase the new album and be escorted to the front of the line to meet the band!! Whoop-de-fuckin-do!! $20 for an album one could purchase for $13?? That really pissed me off and I didn’t get in line, although there were quite a few people in line to meet them (him?). After the show, which Ozzy didn’t play, we were listening to some Seattle radio station that was having a post Ozzfest show, and they played “Carry On” and after the song was over the DJ raved about how “Jason totally rocked!” No mention of the other members of the band – fuck that! ……and the absolute worst part of the experience was this: Girl #1 – “Wow, look at that – it’s just an outline of a guitar!” Girl #2 – “Oh, or is it a bass?” Girl #1 - “Oh, it doesn’t matter, it just rocks!!” Two little 14/15 year old dumbass chicks, you know the ones wearing the flare-bottom hip huggers with their baby fat hanging out and shit, up front lamely pumping their “devil horns” to someone they had no clue about...I’m sure even they weren’t stupid enough to pay $20 to meet the band. Anyway, I really had to rant about that one. It was great to see them live again and I am definitely not trying discourage anyone - if anything, go to the stupid festival because Voivod is playing and hopefully you'll have good company as I did so that you can stomach the rest of it!! Oh, and my birthday is on Friday!!

Hey Hypergrrl! Thanks for the review! I passed up the opportunuty to check out the Ozzfest there in Auburn to go to a record convention instead... But I had some friends that went and they pretty much made the same observations. Strange how Voivod is avoiding their core audience and pretending they never wrote or recorded Rrroooaaarrr, Killing Technology, Dimension Hatross, Nothingface (except that damned PF cover ), The Outer Limits, or anything with Eric Forrest! WTF?! But hey, there's Angel Rat and that new album! Those should appeal to Ozzfest types who have been weaned on Godsmack, Kid Rock, and Korn. Bleah. BTW - The record convention provided me with nice vinyl copies of Venom's "At War With Satan", Hawkwind's "Doremi Fasol Latido" and the new Alchemist cd for $5, making it worth the sacrifice of missing 20 minites of Voivod plus 9 hours for nu-metal hell.

I could agree with that Warcorpse. They should have aimed for the 'metal' crowd, the people who were into thrash and death metal and had an ear for inventive metal music, instead of the stupid kids my age who don't give a shit about anything other than image or being with the 'in' crowd. Or going back to the 'TOL' sound, which may have been good when alt-rock was still alive (vaguely) but is next to irrelevant now. The same ethic really should have applied to the tours, aim for that metal crowd, play those old, fast, nasty songs. Like what fuckin' Metallica, much as I hate to say, are doing. They're touring with the shittiest bands in existence, but they're playing a pretty damn good setlist, packed with the old songs. They're playing Blackened every fuckin' night, for god's sake.People would like to hear 'Order of the Blackguards' or 'Nuclear War', or 'Tornado'. Face it, they have written some of the best thrash songs in existence, play to your strengths. And if they want weird, throw in 'Nothingface' and 'Into my Hypercube' or something. Urgh, I can feel the negativity coursing through my veins. I've ranted too long, and most of it's bullshit anyway. Gah.

If Voivod, on Ozzfest, wore bullet belts, spikes, army pants and played "To The Death!" or "Order of the Blackguards" do you think the kids at Ozzfest would take a closer look? Yes! (maybe)
Well, looking from that perspective, it would have been far better for Voivod, fan-wise, to have done the tour with Nile and Napalm Death. Anyway (hope I'm wrong), the nu-metal kids will hardly get into Voivod's music at all, it's just too complicated for their fragile little heads. I speak for myself on this, I would have paid loads of money to see THAT tour, instead of fuckin' Ozzfest. Nile, ND and Voivod on the same bill? Couldn't get any better, could it?

Interesting observations Warcorpse, and Lycanthrope-Well, you know how I feel about the tour. You can never do your fans justice doing 35 mins. after being away for ten years. They could have gone with harder material on the set. But really, they are just getting re-started. I am pleased with the new album not being an absolute grind-fest. I am getting old too, and Snakes grooves and melody are enough these days. I am sure the next album will be even heavier, not because it said so in the rumors but because it will be challenging for them to accomplish something more, and I think they will go for it. I know some of you guys are closer as friends to the band. You might suggest for them to keep their options open for getting on another tour after Ozzy. Either as a supporting band or on a package of Thrash bands. In the fall, new Destruction will be out. And Exodus later. Heck jump on the crummy Anthrax tour if it helps. get on the Lacuna Coil tour. But you gotta reach the metallers again, and with a bigger, longer set. I think most metallers know Ozzy is passe in a major sense, and skipped this Ozzfest. Plus, the economy is bad for expensive endeavors. Its all nice to pay homage, I did with "No More Tears," some 11 years ago. But everyone knows hes passe, and needs to retire. He should have five years ago. But the American marketing machine wouldn't allow it, the money is too tempting. That anecdote of the Voivod CD sale to meet the band reminds me of the Ozzy "farewell" tour of "No More Tears." For 25 bucks you could get your photo taken with Ozzy and a couple of big, fake breasted bimbos.

Thanks Noitall! Stretch will confined to a small carrier for the next 6-8 weeks You know she's just loving it, too As for Ozzfest, a friend of mine was just telling me the other day how I tend to only see the worst in situations, so here now are my "Top 10 Reasons That Ozzfest Was Actually A Rockin' Fesitival Even Without Ozzy": 10. It was hotter than fuck when we got there, but were lucky enough to be over 21 to enter the airconditioned beer building!9. Beer in the 'beer building' was only $7.00! 8. It was hotter than fuck, but luckily the clouds rolled in just in time for Voivod! 7. I saw and spoke briefly with one very cute male Voivod fan who wasn't 15 years old! 6. Got to eat really nasty, expensive food with no guilt because I had no other alternatives! 5. Witnessed a lemon and shampoo fight between he "grass" people and the people in the expensive seats! 4. Snuck into the expensive seats for free! 3.My friends came up with a new nickname for me: "Korn - the food of my peeps" (you had to be there)! 2. I got to see a young girl, who had obviously been drinking illegally, puke up her guts right in the middle of a busy walkway - and I got to gag myself, too! ...and finally, give me shit about it if you'd like: 1. Jasonic was on the other side of the stage!
