Just got this. Yes, it's identifiably Mastodon, but it sounds almost as if the band has gone into a parallel universe. Layered vocals (with all band members contributing), top-notch production, intricate/tasty guitar riffage, and drumming that...well, I can't quite explain other than to say that if Spiderman could play drums, it'd sound like this.

IMHO, this is the best album of 2009. Yes, it's only March, but I don't see how any other band can outawesome "Crack the Skye".

WOW!!! I haven't been 'blown away' or gotten hooked on Mastodon like a lot of people have, but this sounds like something I should investigate further.

You also got the bonus 'making of...' DVD? It was pretty cool to watch. As for the album itself, I'm still getting into it. So far I think it's damn good.

Seconded. Proggier than ever, I must add.

I like these guys, but I'm hoping this one will be a bit less 'convoluted'.

'Crack The Skye' beats 'Blood Mountain' on all fronts.

WOW!!! just went to their special site for this album and listened to some tracks... A-FUCKIN-MAZING!!! Great tunes and I love the way this singer is vocalizing this time. Much better than the "dime a dozen" delivery he used on Blood Mountain (the only Mastodon cd in my collection). Is this a new vocal styling for him or is Blood Mountains rough and raw vocals the exception in the catalog? So, I jumped over to Amazon and ordered the cd/dvd version along with an Ian Gillan "Glory Years" dvd and the new Queensryche "American Soldier" (to get free shipping).
Can't wait to get this order and crank it the fuck up.

thanks for this thread and everyone's reviews for peeking my interest.

It's a big departure with the vocals on this record. This album gives me the same feeling as when I first heard things like Dimension Hatross, Abigail, etc. Odd yet more & more rewarding with each listen. It's like something that came out in the late 80's but blasted into the future, if that makes sense.

Greg, that was my initial impression of the vocals also. I related it how Snake changed his style making the music and lyrics more accessible, more interesting, and totally unique.

Hoping I get mine today.

I absolutely agree and have the same experience with it as you.
Listened to half last night before going to sleep...Started over with it today.

I can dig it!

Did i read somewhere that this cracked top 11 in America on Billboard?
This band deserves all the recognition it gets.

I have been overdosing on this cd since I got it 2 days ago... a-fuckin-mazing. It's incredible how actually "singing" can totally transform a band.

This album has got it all!!!!

I'm really looking forward to hearing this. Also I don't get the negative criticism of Blood Mountain which I thought was wayyyyy better than Leviathan......much more well-written and thought out. Still I believe nothing will improve on their debut ep....those songs are crushing and timeless.

Hearts Alive has one of the best guitar solo's ever recorded on it IMO. I'm about to listen to this again while in the middle of ripping old vhs to dvd.
Anyone who wants a ton of old metal show footage on dvd, send me an email.
Here's a sample of what I've got so far.
Disc 1: Infernal Majesty - Live Detroit, MI 10-04-88 Blind Illusion - NYC Metal Church - PA 1989 - Toronto 1986
Disc 2: Flotsam & Jetsam - Boston, MA 1988 Wrequim - Houston, TX 11-4-89
Disc 3: Confessor - Raleigh, NC 2-6-93 Defiance - Chicago IL 9-28-90
Disc 4: Tirant Sin - Buffalo, NY 6-12-87 Metal Church - Seattle '83 Trouble - Milwaukee - 9-25-87

Sorry for the OT but Crack The Skye puts me in the mood for old stuff.[/I]

Did you go last night? I tried calling you back and considered heading downtown, but after watching LOST, I figured it was too late to get into an free, all-ages show in a small place like the Launchpad.

I arrived too late to get a wristband, so was literally and rudely kicked out at 7pm by an arseholian door dude. The bar allowed folks to come in for happy hour (drinks 1/2 off!) so I went in and had a few beers since I knew a bunch of people inside. However, Launchpad being the Launchpad with their $10 minimum on credit cards...I hadn't spent a minimum of $10 by 7pm (I mean I like beer, but I don't like beer enough to drink 5 in a row in an hour!).
So I went to cash out with door dude hovering over my shoulder, and find out I HAVE to purchase one more beer to make the minimum! So I buy the beer which I did not need and door dude hovering there telling me to "drink up"...wtf? Anyhoo. I gave the beer to the guy next to me, signed the cc receipt and was rudely escorted to the door.
AND, the bar folks would not let me go to the ladies room because I didn't have the requisite yellow wristband! What the hell is wrong here? I've spent lots of $$$ at this place the past who knows how many years supporting bands I love, and supporting the bar. Totally lame how they treated me. So, did not see Mastodong, but Karlo did! Let's ask him how they were.

The entire album is just one addictive groove after another. Oblivion is a fuckin monster that just reels you in and sucks out your brain. The rest of the album is also mind blowing. I still haven't gotten bored with it after playing it every day.

I bought Blood Mountain because everyone was raving about how great it was and how heavy it was but after listening it to a few times with an open mind, it did nothing for me. The singing was so typical and boring, the music was heavy but probably because of the vocals I stuck it on the shelf and chalked it up to a waste of $14 (at least the artwork is cool) and just a band that sounds like all the other millions of heavy bands with a singer with no style or originality.

Once I heard the online tracks from Crack The Skye, that was all I needed to give them another shot.... and DAMN this one could very well be album of the year for me.... even if Porcupine Tree releases their new one one time this fall Crack The Sky is gonna be hard to beat. Although there is that album titled Infini by that Voivod band due out in June, and the new Heaven & Hell in a week, and Clutch has a new one hitting the streets in July... it's going to be a great fuckin year for music my friends.

Schro you know you're one of my favorite people on here but I have to take issue with the 'BM sounded like a million other bands' comment. Buddy, you've got to be kidding me! I'm sorry, but there is no other band out now that comes close to sounding like a single song off that record. Nobody within light years is close to it......And I know you're particular on vocals but even those are tonally distinct from everything else out there. I mean I can understand if you didn't like the music but that comment irks me a bit.....
