I've been a fan of Voivod for over half of my life now. I first heard them the day my older brother popped in side one of Killing Technology on the day he brought it home. From the instant I heard that unique dissonant, punky, heavy guitar tone, I was grabbed and would never be let go. From day one, I've had the same reaction to Piggy's guitar playing - 'how the hell does he do that?!?'. Here I am 18, 19 years later and I'm still saying 'how the hell does he DO THAT?!?!', only now I'm listening to the songs while driving my two daughters around in a minivan. The more things change...

We are among the fortunate ones; we got to appreciate Piggy and Voivod while he was alive (it's weird, awful and sickening to write that). We're the fortunate ones who got to see him play before our eyes, got to speak to him offstage, got to correspond with him and get to know him. The most fortunate of us - Jean-Yves, Denis B., Michel, Eric and Jason - got to be in a band with him and create some of the most unique, amazing, astounding songs ever written. We ARE fortunate - Denis left behind a legacy that we'll always be able to revisit simply by playing a CD/mp3/tape/record/DVD/VHS. Those songs will never die, and for that I'm grateful. For this I thank Denis - he has added something special to my life that I'll never forget and will always appreciate. That thank you of course extends to Jean-Yves, Denis B., Michel, Eric and Jason, naturally. Denis was part of a whole - my favorite band of all time - VOIVOD.

His legacy looms large - I don't doubt that we'll all hear people saying 'I wish I had heard Voivod when Piggy was still alive' or 'I wish I had seen them' or 'I wish I had known how great Voivod was!'. We knew. We understood how special Voivod was and appreciated Piggy for what he was - an innovator, a pioneer and a living, breathing, walking GUITAR GOD. That kind of sentiment usually gets my eyes rolling, but it somehow seems appropriate when discussing Denis D'Amour.

I'm still in disbelief. I can't imagine my life without seeing Voivod again. I look at pictures of Piggy playing that bad-ass Liberatore and my stomach is in knots. It's of some comfort to know that there are songs that he played on that I've never heard and someday (hopefully) I will. These final Voivod songs are going to hold such a different meaning than they would have had cancer not taken Denis from us.

Rest in peace, Denis.
